TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT

Up ] Next ]

This may be the most important function of the human resources department.  Once policies, procedures, and rules are written, they must be communicated.  Once the strategic plans of the company are established, they must be communicated and followed by all employees.  Training and development is the tool to start the process of accomplishing those goals.   Training activities focus on the skills and knowledge required to perform a job or task or to improve upon the performance of a current job or task.  Training is appropriate when skills and knowledge are missing and the individual has the willingness to learn.  ACS develops, facilitates and monitors training in adherence to the legal and regulatory factors of training.   All regulations that deal with adverse impact and adverse treatment govern the training process.  A few types of training ACS can provide are listed below.

Orientation - Orientation is an important factor in business.  An effective orientation system explains who the employee is working for, the employer's expectations, policies and procedures governing the work, and what the employee gets for choosing this employer.

Organizational Training - The overall function of training and development is to support an organization's needs as described in its strategic business plan.  Communicating the organizations mission statement, strategic business plan, and tactical plans, and linking those to departmental and individual expectations are essential.

Management/Supervisory/Leadership Training - ACS develops and facilitates training to enhance the management skills of the client's supervisory staff.

Customer Service - ACS develops and facilitates training for employees to enhance their skills in areas like customer service.  This can deal with internal and external customers, as well as internal and external vendors.

Sales Training - ACS develops and facilitates training for general sales techniques such as overcoming objections or showing empathy.

Interpersonal training - ACS develops and facilitates training to improve interpersonal skills which improves communications and operations.  This training may focus on skills like listening, questioning, explaining, and nonverbal communications.

Personal development - ACS develops training focusing on broadening an employee's personal skill base.  These programs generally prove as advantageous to the company as they are to the individual.  These include sessions on time management, oral and written communication, career pathing, creativity, wellness training, interpersonal skills, etc.

Awareness training - Given the amount of diversity in the workplace, employees must be more accepting and tolerant of other cultures and perspectives.  This can include sexual harassment prevention, diversity training, AIDS awareness, etc.
